You find the source, the voices, the horns, the piano and drums, they start hitting you from the gate leading to the little house tucked away in the back. It's a Honeydrops house party, the windows are foggy, the neighbors are cool, you'll pick up an instrument or a microphone, a piece of floor to tear up, and we appreciate you just digging in and being a part of it. The laid-back groove of the Brooks Prumo Orchestra hits the sweet spot. This is fine swing without any try-hard hype. The studio mix is balanced, and it hops and slides like music should (unlike some other contemporary jazz). "Out of Nowhere" is outstanding: inspired arrangement, knockout playing, genuine emotion. The vocal numbers get better with every listen, and "Blue Lester" has about it a certain sunburn-on-your-skin mint julep nighttime ease. jakespatz
